Keep to the Higher Ground!


Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

This isn’t just a great bible verse….Christian or not this is a challenge for anyone who is faced with life.  Last time I checked, that’s everyone!  This verse is more than just keeping your chin up or a positive view on life.  To see the silver lining even in the worst of times, is a behavior that is learned and practiced…and practiced…and practiced!  This doesn’t come easily!  This is something that takes time to implement into our lives.  To create the habit of seeing and choosing to focus on what is noble (looking at the fact that our husband hasn’t cheated or that he showed up to work today or looking at the fact that his socks and underwear are on the floor again! )  Focusing on what is right (No one will even bother to notice or know what I did day in and day out because it was the right thing to do!)   Focusing on what is pure (my children did the dishes last night without being asked because they wanted to do something nice for me…but the dishes were put into the dishwasher all crooked and it wasn’t turned on!  The purity of them wanting to love from them to you.)  Focusing on what is lovely (ladybugs, Fall colors, Wheat fields, snow-covered hills, placid lakes, a 13 yr old dressed up for Christmas Eve service, a son opening up the door for his mother, an older couple holding hands, a tender look from a husband to his wife, The lighting of a candle, a quiet cup of tea, a beautiful song, a clean house, a young man who honors his date, the lifting of a brides veil, a sunflower, the woods after a Spring rain) and Focus on what is admirable (A husband who honors his wife, fighting for freedom, going after a dream, finishing school, getting up every day and going to work, a teen with a soft heart towards their parents, parents who adore that same teenager)…

To notice the excellent and praiseworthy in the midst of chaos, trouble or just daily life is a challenge and goes against our “natural selves”!  I have a daughter who every school day wakes herself and her brother up, gets ready for school, kisses her mother every morning and too many mornings what I see…she doesn’t have her shoes on yet!  Or, that breakfast is not eaten yet!  What is the matter with me??  Our natures are such that God had to give us directive…  

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Daily work on this.  Add this into your lives.  Create the habit of seeing the wonderful in life and it will go well with you!  I’ll do the same and together we will add to not only to our lives but all those that we come into contact with!
